I-610 Bypass Installation
As one of the few means of traversing the heart of New Orlean’s City Park, the I-610 underpass at Golf Drive sits desolate and dejected. Consisting of several concrete picnic areas and a storage container for City Park exhibitions, the site yearns for the company of vistors yet repels them with its gloomy atmosphere and barren environment.
Designed by a partnership between the design firm Fievre-Jones Inc., the Tulane CityCenter and City Park, the proposed light installation will seek to visually engage visitors while providing a much needed physical barrier to the unprogrammed spaces beneath the interstate. With no physical attachment or dependence on the Infrastructure of I-610, the installation will be completely self-sustainable and utilize Photo-Voltaic cells to meet 100% of its electrical demands. The higly visual experience will draw visitors into the site while highlighting the ephemeral quality of the space. As an architectural endeavor, the installation will define boundary and border, while engendering an appropriate threshold for vistors transitioning between the two halves of City Park.
